Veterans Day takes place each year on Nov. 11 to honor the end of World War I as well as show appreciation to our veterans all across the United States. In 1919, the holiday was established to recognize the first anniversary of World War I ending and was referred to as Armistice Day. In 1938, through an act of Congress, Armistice Day became a federal holiday. The name was changed in 1954 to honor all veterans, not just those who served in the First World War. Veterans Day honors all veterans, both living and deceased, at ceremonies recognizing the sacrifices made and providing opportunities for reflection. It also honors the veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve. On Veterans Day at Cadott High School, there is an assembly with students in the entire district, their families, and local veterans who have served. Mrs. Deborah Yeager organizes the Veterans Day assembly each year to “recognize community members and staff who served this great country.” This year's featured speakers are Chief Master Sergeant Lindsay Ann Rykal and Colonel Jeannie M. Jeanetta. Each year, the choir and band perform for the audience, and elementary school students create posters for the veterans that they showcase during the assembly. Each grade level will wear red, white, or blue, showing their love of the country. After the assembly, veterans are invited to a lunch to round out the celebration of their dedication to the United States.
